Work Readiness for Gen Z: Bridging the gap between education and employment

Work readiness is a crucial concept in early careers hiring, referring to how well a candidate can apply their skills, knowledge, and attitudes in a workplace setting. While technical and role-specific skills are often developed on the job, work readiness discussions typically focus on soft skills—communication, resilience, self-awareness—along with basic professional competencies like time management, virtual meeting etiquette, and workplace collaboration.

Over half of UK employers believe that young people entering the workplace are not job-ready (CIPD Changing Face of the Labour Market Report). And young people are telling us they need help too: 91% of students surveyed by UCAS said they wanted help developing soft workplace skills like communication, teamwork and confidence.

So, how can employers bridge this widening gap between education and the workplace?
